A Day in the Life of a Siding and Roofing Project Getting Started with Prefab Corners

Up next, we’re going to take some of this LP Smart Side trim that’s 3/4 of an inch thick and make some prefab corners uh for the outside corners and see if it works. I guess we’re going to install these tight to the set up there. So, but in that case, we need to be the ones cutting that out for the J channel to run through. I don’t want someone else doing it. It could get gnarly. 134. Does that sound right? LP Smart Side does make prefab outside corners, but they’re 6 in trim, which we don’t want here. A little bigger than we want for this job. Yep. Jamie’s measuring here the height of our table saw so that we can make an out feed catch so that these boards don’t want to do that number as we’re putting this bevel cut on them. Could get really gnarly. Did you check the saw horses? I did. It’s too low. We could put a thing under it, but I hate to move this. There you go. All right, we got That looks about right. Now that we have these boards ripped to width, we’re going to use a scrap piece of material to gauge the height of the material so that we can set the width of our cut here with the angle the miter cut on the table saw exactly right the first time. Hopefully.

Testing the First Prefab Corner: (A Day in the Life of a Siding and Roofing Project)

A Day in the Life of a Siding and Roofing Project
A Day in the Life of a Siding and Roofing Project

We got this piece made up, painted up, dried, and we’re going to stick it on here and see how it looks. Looks good, doesn’t it? You’re not in love with it. Don’t even joke about it. I don’t know if it’s just the ratio of how narrow it is to how much it sticks out, you know. Well, 3/4 is the thinnest of this trim you can buy. Thickness it is. And if it’s any thinner, it be really hard to nail it together with a m. No, this is the most minimal I think I can do out of wood like this. So, I think we should let Alexis look at it. I think so. Before we do a bunch of them. I think so, too. I’m almost thinking I don’t want to finish nailing it off, but I guess I It’s freaking nailed everywhere. It’s too late for that. All right, I’ll put the last few nails in it. He loves it now. It’s beautiful now. I looked at it again. Now I love it.

Siding Progress and Scaffolding Setup

So, after weeks of doing siding, we finally have the setup dialed. Ray says the bench at the bottom of the scaffold is where it’s at. If you’re the bottom guy, yeah, we’ll see it. You just sit down, reach everything. Look at that. Wow. I feel like an idiot for not thinking of this now. I literally was on my knees for like So was I. Dang. On gravel. My first time underneath. Huh? The scaffolding. What does that say about us and Ray? Says that we’re not lazy.

Checking Materials and Nail Specifications

Ray’s checking out the specs on our LP Smart side here because we just opened the last box of nails for our coil nailers and they were spiral shank instead of ring shank and they were aluminum instead of galvanized which I’ve never even heard of really. So, we’re checking out to see if that’s okay or not. If it’s not, I guess we’re going home. Get the loading rake ready. Tool belt box. Is that Elvis? Yo, guy. What’s up? You going to have to give that back. Why? Did you get another one? It’s got your name on it. You can’t get another one.

Weather Challenges and Roofing Decisions

It’s been a pretty crazy morning here of flooding. There’s a bunch of accidents, people hydroplaning out here on the highway. And I know Ry is like stuck. The river flooded up in his road. So, we’re just trying to get to work. It’s already like 9:30. Just checking out this creek at the entrance here. And this is usually just like a trickle of water coming down. And now it’s a raging river. Awesome. Luckily, it’s not in the road. A little bit in the road. Brock’s got a water feature at the wedding venue here that wasn’t there before, but luckily I think it’s all going around the building.

Roofing Options and Pricing

Jamie said he finally got some of the roofing prices in today. What do we got? Well, I got to start off by saying normally by this phase in the job, we should already have a roof on, and we don’t. And we need one bad. All right, it’s a little complicated, but this house calls for a standing seam roof, which is the biggest, baddest roof you can buy as far as I know. and it’s going to be over $60,000. That’s not as bad as to do this roof and standing seam. Now, that’s not so terrible. There are less expensive options like standard metal roofing. We call it tough rib or a panels. That’s about $50,000. And I’m waiting on the shingle price to come in right now. In addition to that, I’m waiting on the deal. That’s a deal for the standing seam. Only 10,000. I know. I thought it would be double. Yeah, I I did. And there there may be other types of standing seam or other I don’t know. I don’t know ways to make it more expensive. I’m sure it is. But so I say do the standing scene. I I mean that’s what they want. That’s really what they want. So that’s what you want. Why do you care? It’s going to be awesome. You just want to see it. It will be awesome. It’ll be beautiful.

Siding Installation and Precision Work

Little recap in case you missed it. We’ve been doing siding forever now. But we’re putting our first piece onto a line that we drew with a level so that it’s straight. Especially if they’re ripped and narrower like that. It may not be perfectly straight by itself. Then we’re also checking plum with the level. And everything depends on that one being straight and plum.

Finalizing Roofing Choices

A Day in the Life of a Siding and Roofing Project
A Day in the Life of a Siding and Roofing Project

I got some more roof prices. Okay, I got the price on the shingles. It’s only about 40,000, which is 10,000 less than the cheapest metal option. So shingles is cheaper. It’s 40, 50, or 60. You pick. That’s not as much of a difference as I thought. No, I You’re just getting drinks. I think it I thought it could have been more. This is This is very reasonable. I paid 20 for my house. I know. I’m like, that’s great. This is amazing. Your house Your house sucks though. It’s deep. Yeah, this is This is flat almost. All those prices do include the set and fascia install as well. It does. Which is pretty fair. I’ll say it’s very fair. It’s very fair. Not that you should raise the price. I’m not going to ask again. We’re going to go with it. Yeah.

Paint Mix-Up and Weather Concerns

You guys done painting already? Yeah, we’re done. Yeah. It’s the wrong paint. No. Yes. Wrong color. Wrong color. Yeah. It’s like it’s like two different companies have the same color. So it’s Yeah, it’s the other It’s the other company. So it’s a different Yeah. different mix. So that’s where he’s going to go. There he goes. We’ll have to get more paint. Later today is not going to be good for painting. Supposed to rain starting in 2 hours for the next 3 hours.

Unexpected Discoveries at Lowe’s

I’m checking out at Lowe’s right here and my guy Danny is helping me out. And I noticed you have some awesome earrings, man. That is a Phillips head screw. And I’ve been in construction and been in Lowe’s my whole life and I’ve never seen that before. So, way to go on that one, man. Feels so good when you get stuff consolidated. You can find what you’re looking for, and you’re not tripping on everything. There we go.

Wildlife Encounters on the Job

A Day in the Life of a Siding and Roofing Project
A Day in the Life of a Siding and Roofing Project

Watching for snakes up under the Oh, yeah. There’s definitely critters sometimes. Uh, you’re clear. Yeah, I was thinking about that black that black plastic. Get in there and warm up. Yep. I found uh snakes, rats, mice. Dude, actually, the closest call I had is I reached to grab a block that was just sitting on the ground and picked it up and underneath was a rattlesnake. Oh my. Coiled up and as soon as I lifted the block, she was rattling. I was like, “Woo!” At least it wasn’t copper head.

Finishing Touches on Doors

I guess we’ll save these for something. I’m not sure what, but that could be mega blocking. Max and I are watching this video with the guy with the earrings, and I think they’re not just screws. I think they like snap together and have a thin part that goes through your ear. That’s what I think. I’m trying to figure it out why he got them at Hot Topic and not at Lowe’s. Yeah, cuz you could get them right there off the shelf and just You can just keep sizing up, too. Make you some big gauges and have some lag bolts in there eventually.

Finalizing Siding and Painting

A Day in the Life of a Siding and Roofing Project
A Day in the Life of a Siding and Roofing Project

So, hey, you better move on it now cuz there are like five boards left down there and they’re going crazy sighting. I’m going to spray it and I’m going to get Max to blow on it so it’ll dry. That’s how you get your ends painted up real fast. Do them all at once. We’re sort of running out of time on the time allowed for us to put finish on the inside of these doors that are wood. I’ve got a sanding sponge and we’ve got some finish. Watch out. Hey, I really didn’t want you getting in that can. I’m telling you what, this came in the mail. I’m pretty sure that’s why. Oh, yeah. That’d be bad if it popped open in the mail. Uh, yeah.

Using High-Quality Polyurethane

Well, this is a pretty expensive material here. And it’s a really good material. This is black polyurethane, by the way, if I didn’t say that already. It’s waterbased. And it’s pre-made or premixed black. You can get white also. I’ve used it on a lot of furniture. So, this is like a furniture or cabinet grade finish. So, I don’t want to use paint on these doors. Paint will be like sticky or tacky. Uh, not easy to clean so much. I’m really good at opening cans here. You can tell with a screw. We might need to stir this pretty thoroughly, I would say. Yeah.

Sponsorship Shoutout: TopShelf Trailers

Thank you to TopShelf Trailers for sponsoring today’s video. We’ve got a Top Shelf dump trailer and we love it. Jamie did the research when we wanted to get one. They have a front piston that lifts the bed no matter how much weight you put in it. Up to 16,000 lb, which is way more than I’m allowed to tow anyway. So, that’s great. It’ll dump every time and won’t get bogged down and leave you with a trailer full of stuff that you can’t dump. I really love this hydraulic jack that helps you to put the trailer down on your hitch and lift it off super fast with the push of a button. No cranking or anything like that. And this thing’s great. It’s like having a miniature dump truck or almost a fulls size dump truck that you pull behind your regular truck, which is awesome. We’ve used it to haul dirt, mulch, construction debris, branches, boulders. We’ve had it packed full so many times now. It’s been incredible.

Truck Troubles and Mechanical Issues

What I was going to say is that it really gave us the freedom to be independent of having to hire someone else to do all these things that we need to do. It’s it’s crazy and I don’t like to be depending on someone when I can do something myself. Oh, the excavator. We’ve called the excavator actually in the bed of this thing, which is awesome. Uh we have the 3-FFT walls, although they have different options as far as the height, 2T, 4T, I think custom options, 5T, 6T, taller. Give them a call if you think you might be able to benefit from a dump trailer. And if you do construction, you will be able to. There’s a phone number on the trailer. You can call that or you can call our custom phone number for Perkins Builder Brothers that’s on here below me somewhere. Call that one and they will know that we sent you. So, thank you again to TopShelf Trailers. Let’s get back to work.

Jamie’s Diesel Truck Problem

Jamie’s diesel truck sounded like a bulldozer the other day. It sounded like a helicopter with one blade on it is what it sounded like trying to fly. It was bad, but it would come and go. That’s the weirdest thing. So, the torque converter came unbolted from the flywheel. Yeah, that’s right. Right. So, it was just it’s just just rolling around just beating and banging on the case or whatever. Sounded like valves slamming against the block, too. It did. And and I had a good friend that had one of the main bearings lock up on the crankshaft on his Ram just like mine. And so, I thought that could be it, too. But I don’t know. I mean, I thought it sounded cool. I You did? Yeah. I’m more into the quiet kind of sound. That was a little too loud for me.

Detailing the Door Finish

Um, this is a great stuff to spray, but I watch your leg there. Oh, yeah. Um, I’m not sure if I’m going to have to take anything apart here to get finish on anything. I don’t think so on this door. I hope not, but I’ll just give it a quick scuff. Especially where we’ve touched it, it might have oil on it. It Yeah, that’s getting dirty already here. Yeah, I’ll hold the door hand. Go ahead. Yep, that’s it. We don’t really want to do sanding marks and that’s why these pads are really good. 180 grit. That’s pretty fine. Oh yeah, that’s going to slick on pretty nice coverage actually for one coat, too.

Cutting In Around Glass Seals

This is actually pretty easy to cut in by hand cuz it’s got this little micro gasket against the glass that is also black. So, you can kind of run up against that and not really tell that you’ve hit it. This would be really hard if it was white, though. All right. How’s it going with the stain or poly I should say? Yeah, it’s going good. I think it’s definitely laying flatter than paint does. Like not leaving a bunch of brush strokes which is nice. I was wondering about that cuz actually I’ve used this stuff a lot but I’ve never put it on with a brush. I’ve only sprayed it. Yeah, it’s it’s laying real flat and nice. Just makes me really glad that all the rest of the windows in here are vinyl and not wood. Oh, I’m telling you what, it would be mega time, dude. So, no, it’s it’s good.

Planning for the Ceiling Material

Uh I think two coats will probably get it. And I don’t know if they want a top coat or if they want this satin finish or what, but um I’m hoping the satin finish is all that it’s going to take. Okay. Well, I think we should just do this coat and wait till we’re about done to do the final coat. Yeah. I mean, they might get a little dirty and take a light sanding and and a finish coat. It’s all you. Sorry. You kind of cut out their bad idea. I take this brush down and see if Jason will take over. I don’t want that. I got one done. You can do the other. Bro, I will be in my truck faster than you can save.

Finalizing Roofing Material Choice

Where’d Jay go? What kind of roof you want? Uh, a metal one. Okay. I’m liking that. A full-on standing seam. What’s the name? What’s the name? Standing seam. Yeah, but there’s two of those. Oh, there’s I forget what he called the uh something lock snap lock and one other thing. I forget what he called it. One of them sticker gauge, one of them gauge. We want the thick. Okay. I was going to ask. I love it. You like it that way? Nice. I like my roof thick. Yep. I do too. Yep. She think way to go.

Jamie’s First Siding Attempt

If I’m not crazy, I think this is Jamie’s first bit of sighting that he’s nailed on the house. We’re about 3 weeks into it. I heard him out here telling Jason how to do it. I was right up there. Yeah. Yeah. He goes, “You know, you have to shoot in the corner, right?” I go, “Bro, I’ve been signing for a month straight. I think I got it, dude. Freaking new guy.” Oh, I was smiling when I heard that. Oh. Hey, somebody’s got to keep an eye on everything around here. Yeah, I know. Well, you picked the best side. No windows. Yeah, seriously. Just straight boards. It’s pure purely coincidence. You know, this is the only wall that didn’t have any opening.

Wrapping Up the Day

It’s about 4:15. I’m going to see if I can knock out the rest of this door. It’s one of those things that you think is going to be really quick and easy and then it’s not. I got this thing almost clean and it just broke. Oh my gosh. Last word on another side coming in here. Coming in hot. Somebody asked me the other day if I was an extra on the perfect road. Extra. I guess that’s one way to put it. Tomorrow. Yeah. Bring me painters tape. Okay. Okay. And a new paint brush. Really? One a day? You know you can clean them, right? I broke it. Oh, we could probably nail it back together if you had nails that were like Did you stomp on it? Like No, I was just cleaning it. And uh broke, right? Good story.

Starting Fresh the Next Day

Hey, it’s Tuesday morning. We are back at the job. Got my bullet peanut breakfast. You want some? I’m not even being mean, but that might be the most disgusting food out there. I think they’re delicious. Dude, peanuts are supposed to be crunchy. I don’t know. I think they’re good. Anyway, uh they’re going to get started siding here. And I brought something to work today right here. My art brush. I got to get all those little detailed spots. And fun fact, I was voted most artistic in my senior yearbook. You? Yep. out of my senior class. Really? I don’t know if that matters for painting doors, but we’ll see. What kind of art did you do? Uh, like drawings, paintings, nudes.

Ensuring Precision in Siding

All right, let me catch it so we don’t hit a window. Wow. Got it. Got it. One finger. So, it’s a pretty long process to get everything set on one side for siding like this. We’ve already got saw horses, cut station, zip tape, material, flashing, touch-up paint, brush, planer, saw, coil nails, jigsaw, level, pull bars, pancake template, coaul, gun, feeder block, 3/8 spacer gauges, 3/16 spacer gauge, 2-in spacer gauge, sharpened pencil. It’s game time. I think it is. We’re set. Yeah. Snips. Okay. Everything we need. Wow. Right here. I’m going to Yo, could you get out of my way? Seriously, back in me like that again. See what happens.

Boiled Peanuts Debate

Did you try one? Yeah. Why’d you do it if you don’t like them? Well, cuz I thought maybe I didn’t remember how bad it was. I think they’re delicious. Leave a comment. Whose team you on? Boiled or not boiled? I like them both. How about both? I don’t like those. I like the butter kind. Like it’s called peanut butter and butter. What do you peanut butter? Beautiful.

Final Painting Details

Uh, come back at me a little bit. The paint. Uh, it’ll it’ll get cocked in. Let me uh we’ll shoot both of the ends. Jason’s putting the laser eye on this thing. How’s it look? It looks way down. You are correct. Um, what? Big one in there. I think this is going to work without having to tape. You see what I’m doing right here? It’s um it’s going. You don’t even want to know. Getting pretty serious these little mini brushes. Yeah, it’s uh You see what I’m Look at this edge I’m painting. It’s like it’s only a/4 in of wood with stuff on both sides. So, that’s what’s going on. Uh I could tape it, but I think this is faster.

Final Coat and Cleanup

I’ve got the edge of the door down there done. And there was one other section on the slider I didn’t do. You can see it. It’s this gap. The reason I didn’t do it is cuz I’ve got to cut in behind here. There’s a little white gasket or bumper right there. I don’t want to paint it and I don’t know if I can take it out without damaging it. So, I’m just taking this and just sort of twisting it in behind that gasket. See, it’s going to take a minute, but uh at least I know I’m not going to destroy the door. There you go. 30 minutes later. All painted, all perfect. And maybe I can get away with one coat on that.

Planning for the Ceiling Installation

Another thing we need to get ordered and headed this way is the material for this ceiling. There’s a ton of tongue and groove and also beams we got to wrap. A ton of ton what? A ton of tongue and groove. That’s what I said. I’ve never heard you say that. Anyways, this material hopefully is going to be prefinished. I hope so. It’s going to be fairly expensive. So, we need to order the correct amount, like slightly more than we need. And Jamie’s trying to figure that out right now.

Measuring and Calculating Materials

There’s a couple ways you can do this. Obviously, you could measure the area, the square footage you could say, of the ceiling, and you can divide that by how many square feet each board is, and then do the math. Well, I’m doing something slightly different, which is this. Given that each of these sections is divided in between the beams, and there will be a certain length board that fits in between, I need to first make sure I get the right length board that doesn’t produce a ton of waste. But that also doesn’t leave me running short on each length. So I’m actually measuring the precise lengths of each of these sections to try to figure out what length board plays nice with these numbers. Is 12 footers going to work if we cut them in half? What I’m going to No, the short the short answer is no. Each of these measurements is like 75 in. It’s like 3 in more than 6 ft. That’s right. But these are less than by a little bit. And I’m going to go check in the bedroom and see if those are less. We may be able to strategically cut like one long one and one short one. We might. But the problem is what if there’s only 50% of what we need to make up for this in the shorter lengths and then we end up really with a ton of ton of ton of overhead. Listen, that’s for you to figure out and you to tell me when you’re done.

Final Adjustments and Sign-Off

So, I am going to figure that out, but I’m also figuring it whether or not we’re going to do a 1×6 or a 1×8 tongue and groove board. And so right here you can see in my numbers this looks like gibberish but that’s how many 1x six boards it takes to go across 44 feet and this is the 1×8 boards. So you can see that oh wow 76 versus 106 1×8 which would say 100%. How’s it going with this? Uh, it’s going all right. Couple couple problems. One, this plywood is not level. Oh. So, our inch thing does not work out because like the bottom isn’t level. Yeah. You might be an inch here, but then you put your next board on, flush it on the bottom, and you’re more than an inch. So, what are you doing? So, we ch we uh chalk this line, measured a foot from both ends. Okay. And then measured a foot on these boards. Oh, you got a little tick mark. And we’re just those up. Okay. And then we’re just going to have to take a saw and chop it off later. Okay. So, good. Uh, I got to go up a little bit. All right.

Closing Thoughts and Supplies Needed

So, tomorrow we need window flashing, coil nails, crew of six more people, and uh some coffee. That is it for our video today. We appreciate you watching.
